MODULE 2: HEBREW BIBLE SURVEY

MODULE GOALS: (1) Become oriented with the literature of the Hebrew Bible in its various literary, historical, and theological contexts; (2) grow in the ability to interpret the Old Testament in service of Christian practice.

Week 4: Ketuvim (other writings) and its importance for community

Please read the following article:

•  Chapter 24, (TOT), 680-694.

But we will watch a video in class and receive a cool little assignment due next week.

Week 3: Nevi’im (Prophets)

Please SKIM (seriously) the following:

• Skim: Chapters 21-22, (TOT), pp. 600-649.
• Skim: Bonhoeffer’s Psalms: The Prayer Book of the Bible.

Then write a brief JOURNAL ENTRY (about 3 paragraphs): How you might use Bonhoeffer's work in ministry. Think: who can benefit from the work and why?

Week 2: Torah

Please read the following:

• Chapters 19-20, (TOT), pp. 567-599.

Lay Seminary Modules (2023-2024)
Lay seminary consists of weekly readings, videos, and discussions. Cohort discourse occurs 5-5:40pm before Saturday evening services. In addition, there are two benchmark assignments: a mid-course exegesis paper and a final applied ministry project based on the call and vocation of each student.

Note: Module 3 broken into two by break for Thanksgiving week and first week of Advent, for which we will observe the Great Litany.

Lenten break - partnered prayer before service throughout March and work on exegesis papers (due April 6).
