What We Believe

PictureFamous Anglican author and Christian apologist C. S. Lewis, perhaps best known for Mere Christianity and his Chronicles of Narnia series.
Anglicans have no distinct beliefs beyond what Christians have believed since the earliest days of our faith. The ancient creeds and Scripture are our essential guideposts as we struggle together to understand who Jesus is and who He is forming us to be. This is what Anglican author and apologist C. S. Lewis had in mind when he wrote Mere Christianity to "explain and defend the belief that has been common to nearly all Christians at all times” (Mere Christianity, vi).

The Basics

We believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

We believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was born of the Virgin Mary, was crucified, died, and was buried, rose from the dead, and is now seated at the right hand of the Father.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting.

A Little More...

We worship in an "ancient-future" tradition.
Ancient?!  Yes... we have kept certain worship traditions that were commanded to the Jews by God, inherited by the earliest Christians, and passed down to us through the Church for centuries.  For example, we use a regular schedule of scripture readings and celebrate liturgical seasons, and we break bread every Sunday (sometimes called Holy Communion or the Holy Eucharist).

Future?!  Yes... we understand tradition is not good for tradition's sake alone; it serves as a checklist to keep our hearts right before God and with one another, as we anticipate a future when Christ returns and sets all things right.

Three-Stream Anglicanism
We are influenced by three aspects of Anglicanism, a 500 year old expression of faith and practice within the universal Christian Church.  These three streams are catholicism, evangelicalism, and charismatic theology.  Sometimes people think of us as residing somewhere between Roman Catholic and Protestant Christianity... if that helps you, great!  But each Anglican church is a little different.
  • Catholic means "universal." Anglicanism is not a separate religion, but a faithful way of practicing Christianity.  We are rooted in the traditions of the early church and seek to be connected with Christian brothers and sisters throughout space and time;
  • Evangelical means we seek to have personal relationships with God, who wants to change our hearts, make us whole, and equip us to serve others.  Evangelicalism has nothing to do with political ideology;
  • Charismatic theology teaches that the Holy Spirit is alive and well, working through each of us and giving spiritual gifts to His church.  We still believe in miraculous healing, prophesy that speaks truth to the powers of this world, and special gifts to encourage and serve those in need.

We believe the Christian faith cannot be lived individualistically; we need each other to make it to the finish line!

We believe Christianity is a religion of space and time.  When we worship God, we join with angels, archangels, and God-fearers who came before us and will come after we're gone.

We believe every man and woman can understand the Bible and can benefit from applying it to everyday life, but we seek to grow in our ability to properly understand it so we can resist false teachers who weaponize the faith and lead people astray.
